Trump Congratulates Netanyahu on Election Victory
US President Donald Trump issued a statement congratulating incumbent Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on his successful re-election campaign late Wednesday, saying “The fact that Bibi won, I think we’ll see some pretty good action in terms of peace…everybody said, and I never made it a promise, ‘you can’t have peace in the Middle East with Israel and the Palestinians.’ But I think we have a chance, and I think now we have a better chance with Bibi having won.” US National Security Advisor John Bolton added in a separate statement that the US administration will unveil its peace plan, dubbed the “deal of the century” in the “very near future.”

Several other US officials, as well as leaders from India, Austria, Italu and other close allies of Israel and Netanyahu also issued congratulatory statements. In Ramallah, PLO Secretary-General Saeb Erekat issued a statement saying“Israelis have voted to maintain the status quo, as far as the occupation of Palestine. They voted for apartheid and to an endless occupation.”

Meanwhile, Netanyahu was already receiving messages from potential coalition partners late Wednesday laying out their conditions for joining his governing coalition. Also on Wednesday, Attorney-General Avichai Mandelblit’s office transferred all the evidence it has in its possession regarding the open cases against Netanyahu to the Prime Minister’s lawyers, who are pushing for a delay in the proceedings.

Finally, the New Right Party led by Naftali Bennet and Ayelet Shaked is requesting a recount of ballots following its failure to cross the 3.25% electoral threshold required to enter the Knesset. A final tally of votes from IDF soldiers, diplomats serving overseas, prisons and hospitals showed the party missing the threshold by a small number of votes. The Elections Committee issued a statement saying a review of ballots was underway.

BDS Movement Suffers Another Crushing Defeat
The effort to Boycott, Divest and Sanction (BDS) Israel suffered more defeats this week when Nico Delvaux, president and CEO of the Swedish Assa Abloy conglomerate, arrived in the country to inspect some of the many investments his company has here, including the Mul-T-Lock plant in Yavne and the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, which is secured by Assa Abloy security equipment. The visit is meant to explore opportunities for expansion, promising more jobs in both Israel and Sweden in the near future.

Israel Blesses the World
Researchers at Jerusalem’s Hebrew University recently announced that a study they participated in with other international medical researchers has found that a treatment long administered to patients suffering from AIDS is also helpful in treating various forms of dementia. The research will soon enter the clinical trials stage. Also this week, it was announced that Israel-based ELTA Systems, a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), has been awarded contracts to construct and upgrade surveillance systems for dozens of off-shore oil platforms in Mexico and the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago.
